Lindy is our very curious and friendly yellow labrador. Sadly, Lindy was hit by a car on February 9, 2006, which left her with very serious complications and a derangement of her left stifle. She was diagnosed with a tear to her left medial collateral ligament (MCL), left anterior collateral ligament (ACL), left posterior collateral ligament (PCL) and her medial meniscus. On February 14, she underwent her surgery for ligament reconstruction and also received a fixator for stabilization of her leg. Lindy’s fixator was removed on March 15 and soon after she was brought to our clinic. Upon her first visit with us, she had not used her left leg since her original injury. Lindy was completely non-weight bearing on her left hind limb. Her injury left her with many difficulties to overcome; fibrosis was present in the left stifle along with a decrease in PROM (passive range of motion) and a decrease in flexion and extension in the same area. Lindy was also experiencing a decreased range of motion in her left hip along with disuse muscle atrophy. Cinnamon is a 9 year old female
Golden Retriever. On January 1, 2006, Cinnamon underwent
TPLO surgery on her left
stifle. Two weeks later Cinnamon had to have a second surgery
on that leg to correct the implant that was beginning to
shift. Two weeks after that second surgery on March 1, 2006,
Cinnamon was unable to walk at home. Upon evaluation Cinnamon
was diagnosed with a complete rupture to her right CCL (cranial cruciate
ligament). On March 6, Cinnamon underwent another
TPLO surgery, this time to
correct her right leg. She came to our clinic for
rehab every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for 3 1/2
months to aid in her healing process. Click here to
read more about Cinnamon and her recovery. _______________________________________________________________________________________ |

Zeus is a handsome black, 3
year old, Newfoundland with a long history of orthopedic
issues. On March 18 of 2003, Zeus had his first orthopedic
surgery, a TPO on his left hind limb,
which was soon followed by another TPO
on his right side on June 3. Zeus recovered, but in 2005
he partially ruptured his left cranial cruciate
ligament and underwent a TPLO
surgery on May 24. His most recent injury led to his April
18, 2006 TPLO surgery on his right stifle. After his surgery,
Zeus was brought to our clinic for an evaluation of his current
condition. Zeus had an obvious weight bearing lameness in his
right rear limb, an overall unsmooth gait, and decreased PROM (passive range of
motion) in his stifles and
coxofemoral joints.
Zeus also displayed disuse muscle atrophy
in both rear limbs and the lower back area. Click here to read more
about Zeus and his recovery. _______________________________________________________________________________________ |

Duke is a handsome mixed breed
dog that was experiencing a coxofemoral
luxation of his right hip, due to trauma after being hit by
a car. He began
showing problems with his rear limbs and on January 17, 2006, Duke
underwent an FHO surgery. However, after
this surgery Duke was failing to use his right hind limb. In March, Duke was
reevaluated and seemed to be showing significant pain with any
movement in his right hip joint. A repeat surgery was performed on
March 21, 2006 to correct an osteophyte
formation on his right femur. Duke was a very challenging case
due to the length of time that he was non-weight bearing in his
right rear limb.
Originally, his condition was due to his pain prior to
surgery. Later, it was caused by the disuse from
surgery that contributed to fibrosis, muscle
contracture, and muscle weakness. Since Duke had learned that he
could get around well enough without fully using his affected leg,
it became more difficult for our rehab technicians to retrain him
to use it again. As part of his rehab, we designed a brace to
provide support and added weight to help him regain use of his
right leg. Click here to read more about Duke
and his recovery. _______________________________________________________________________________________ |

Kelly is a black and white Border
Collie that belongs to one of our very own staff members. In
February of 2006, Kelly's owner noticed her limping and Kelly was
soon diagnosed with a ruptured CCL (cranial
cruciate ligament), on her right hind limb. Kelly
had her first rehab session here with us on March 6, 2006 following
the surgery that was performed to correct her problem. Kelly
is back again to begin rehab with us following the most recent TPLO surgery on June 27, on her
left leg . Click here to

Chelsea is a 12 year old black and
tan Doberman that started rehab with our clinic in July of this
year. In April of 2006 she was taken to her veterinarian
after she became lame on her right rear limb. Upon
evaluation, her vet diagnosed her with a ruptured CCL (cranial
cruciate ligament), on her right hind limb. On April
20, Chelsea had surgery, a lateral suture repair, to stablize her
stifle. Six weeks
after her surgery Chelsea was still having some lameness and was
only using her limb occasionally. Her owner decided to
begin rehab with our clinic. Click here to

Gabbi is a sweet, female
Daschund. In January
of 2006, Gabbi’s owners noticed her hiding and acting differently
around the house. She
was taken to her veterinarian and was diagnosed with multiple
calcified intervertebral disks on her radiographs. Gabbi
returned to her normal self with the medications that she was
prescribed. In
April of 2006, Gabbi’s pain started to recur and she was soon
unable to use her hindlegs. Gabbi was taken to Texas A&M
College of Veterinary Medicine, which found her to be paraplegic, with absent proprioceptive
testing in her rear legs, and she was diagnosed with Intervertebral Disk
Disease. A myelogram and hemilaminectomy
surgery was performed on May 1, 2006 to treat Gabbi’s
condition. When we
first saw Gabbi, she was recovering from her surgery and still
unable to move her back legs, and would drag herself
around by using her front legs. Click here to read more about
Gabbi and her recovery. _______________________________________________________________________________________ |

Toto is an 8 year old, male,
yorky/silky terrier mix. In May, Toto’s owners
noticed that he had less of a desire to jump up and move
around. One week
later, Toto was unable to stand and seemed to be in pain. On May 11, 2006, he was
referred to Texas A&M after an acute onset of hind limb paraplegia. He was lacking conscious proprioception in both
hindlimbs and was experiencing pain along his spinal column
and back muscles. A myelogram was performed and
the radiographs showed evidence which led to Toto’s diagnosis of Intervertebral Disc
Herniation. A
hemilaminectomy at the affected
disc site was performed. After his surgery, Toto came to
our clinic and was evaluated by Dr. Wall. Toto was unable to properly walk
on all four limbs; he pulled his body forward with his forelimbs
while dragging his hindlimbs. He began therapy with us soon
afterwards. Click here to read more about Toto
and his recovery. _______________________________________________________________________________________ |

Max is a seven year old
energetic Daschund. In
April of 2006 his owners noticed him slowing down and whining more
than usual and a few days later Max was unable to rise in his rear
legs. He was taken to
his veterinarian, who found no superficial or deep
pain in either of his rear legs.
This indicates that he was unable to consciously feel either
of his legs. A myelogram was
performed to locate the lesion in his back that was causing his
spinal cord compression. Max was diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Disease
and underwent a hemilaminectomy surgery soon
after. When he presented to our rehab clinic for
rehabilitation therapy, he was paralyzed and walked dragging his
hind limbs. Click here to read more about Max
and his recovery. _______________________________________________________________________________________ |

Niki is our precious German Shepard
that has been coming to our clinic every Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday to receive therapy to treat her condition. Niki has
been experiencing back pain from several bulging disks in her back
and is also very weak in her hind limbs as a result of this.
During each treatment, Niki receives a 30 minute whirlpool session
that aids in relieving some of her pain. If Niki is having a
good day and feels up to it, we also put her in the underwater treadmill, which
helps in strengthening her hind limbs. Click here to
read more about Niki and her recovery. _______________________________________________________________________________________ |
