Your pet's neurologic system is
really a complicated electrical system connecting arms and legs to
the brain. Problems can occur in the brain, spinal cord, and
peripheral nerves that can impact your pet's abilitiy to walk and
stand. In addition, many neurologic conditions can result in
very severe pain which is difficult to control.
Most neurologic problems encountered
in veterinary rehabilitation medicine are those involving the
spinal cord and/or peripheral nerves. Neurologic deficiency
in these areas can result in mild limb dysfunction (paresis) to
complete paralysis. Following surgical or medical correction
re-establishment of your pet's proper neurologic function is aided
by therapies that stimulate nerves and muscles and their neurologic
connections to the brain.
Rehabilitation therapy will be aimed
then at restoring the neuromuscular connection, limiting the
effects of dissuse, and retraining your companion to walk and
move. Restoration of normal to near
normal neuomuscular activity is possible in most patients
making neurologic rehabilitation very rewarding.
