Pain Management

In many dictionaries pain is defined as “An unpleasant sensation, occurring in varying degrees of severity as a consequence of injury, disease or emotional disorder.” It is now well accepted within the veterinary community that pain, both acute and chronic, can lead to patient suffering and decrease in quality of life. At the Center for Veterinary Pain Management and Rehabilitation, we aggressively address pain with both pharmaceutical therapies and techniques in physical medicine, including acupuncture and myofascial trigger point therapy. We use pain examination techniques to first localize and identify the patient’s pain. Once we know the location of the pain, we then use diagnostic tests to determine its cause—the so called “pain generators”.

Pain is complex, and the more established pain is, the more difficult it is to manage. This complexity often results in a failure to recognize and treat the cause of the pain, which produces a cycle of chronic pain, suffering and decreased quality of life. A complex problem requires a complex solution.
