Stem Cell Therapy
Regenerative stem cell therapy is a very new and exciting treatment modality in veterinary medicine. Stem cell therapy uses adult stem cells that are harvested from the patient’s adipose (fat) tissue. We perform a brief surgical procedure to remove approximately two tablespoons of adipose tissue and then we send that sample overnight to Vet-Stem laboratories in California. There they extract the stem cells, process them, and return them to us the following day. We inject these stem cells back into the patient, at the locations that need tissue repair. Adult stem cells have the ability to enter diseased or injured tissue and “differentiate” into that tissue, thus aiding natural healing.
We currently use stem cells with good results to address:
- Arthritis—We inject the cells directly into the:
- Stifle (knee)
- Hip
- Elbow
- Soft tissue repair—We use stem cells for:
- Tendon repair
- Ligament repair
- Partial ruptures of the Cranial Cruciate Ligament
